History of the Boxes:
Bayuk Cigar was a company started in 1926 with many locations including Lancaster, and York, but headquarters was located in Philadelphia. The cigars were put into boxes, or "shells" so that they could get a lower moisture level. Sixteen percent moisture (the level they began at), would need to be lowered to 13% before they were ready for shipment to prevent molding. Markings on the boxes would usually mean the type of cigars inside the box. The cigars that were manufactured were mostly "Phillies", but also "Garcia Vega", "Webster", and "Medalist", and many more. The boxes are joined together by a dovetailed joint. The dovetailed joint is held together by a pin down through each staggered layer. Bayuk Cigars went out of business in the 1980s, which makes the boxes (shells) age range from 40-90 years old.
