Vintage Brass Fire Tree Belt Buckle Marker Ladder 105 Brooklyn NY Firefighting
In great condition
Beautiful solid brass antique fire insurance marker that has been modified into a belt buckle with brass and welding. These markers were used to indicate that payment had been made in advance to a fire company, or that an insurance company would pay the fire company who responded to put out a fire.
This measure 3" high by 2 1/4" & has a small hole at the top that has been filled with brass. This hole would have been used for hanging the pendant. This piece of memorabilia would be great for firefighter or collector.
Fire mark TREE origin: Because of Ben Franklin's theory that trees attracted lightening and caused the spread of fires, insurance companies refused to issue policies for buildings surrounded by trees. The tree fire mark, issued in 1784 by the 40 members of the Philadelphia Contributors-hip which split off and formed the Mutual Assurance of Philadelphia, symbolized their opposition Franklin’s theory.
